One of the interesting things about Celtic designs is that there are still some nice simple kinds of images, from which you can create different types of tattoos. The simplest of these is Celtic knotwork, which is the basis of most of Celtic artwork. Celtic knots can be seen as symbolizing infinity, how they are intertwined in a continuous spiral. Celtic knots make great tattoos themselves or to other models, such as the Celtic cross. Knotwork can also be used as a border or in addition to other types of tattoos.

Celtic crosses are also popular as tattoos. Can be used as other cross as a Christian symbol, but also have other meanings, such as the cross above it the Christianity as a symbol. The Celtic cross is also called the cross of equality of arms, such as horizontal and vertical lines are of equal length which represents the balance between the opposing forces.

Spirals are another Celtic symbol that work well as tattoos. A kind of spiral, called Triskele is a triple spiral that found in the British Isles dates back thousands of years, that is, even before the Celts. This is very interesting type design makes for a great tribal tattoo.

Another popular type of Celtic design are images or zoomorphic animals. These can include birds, lions, snakes, dragons and other animals. Of course, any animal can be drawn in the Celtic style. If you look at one of the traditional sources of Celtic art, the Book of Kells medieval, one can find many examples of wildlife art. Many images in this book were used as the basis for modern Celtic style tattoos.

Celtic tattoos work especially well with rich colors, which can be anything (at least traditional Ireland) Traditional green to blue, red, or any combination of colors imaginable. Celtic knotwork in bright colors is very evident in the arm or other body part.

Some people wonder how Celtic tattoos are "authentic". This is an interesting question, because there is no real evidence that the ancient Celts even tattoos! They painted, especially to prepare for battle, but while other ancient peoples, the natives of the South Pacific, certainly used permanent tattoos to decorate their bodies, they do not know with certainty whether the Celts.

This does not change the fact, however, that people today use symbols to create tattoos are traditional Celtic in Celtic lands. If we use today in a way that is different, this is only part of how the symbols and cultural practices change and evolve over the centuries.
